Word Count vs Character Count
Word count and character count answer different questions. Word count helps with reading length and draft size; character count helps when a field, platform, or snippet has a strict limit.

Worked example: the same text, different measures
Enter "Hello, world!" without the quotation marks. Both counters report 2 words, 13 characters, and 12 characters without spaces. The comma and exclamation mark contribute to character length but are not words. With a character limit of 15, Character Counter shows 2 remaining. Adding a trailing space raises the total by one without adding a word.
How words and characters are counted
Words are runs of Unicode letters or numbers; internal apostrophes and hyphens keep forms such as don’t and well-known together. An emoji alone is not a word. Character totals use JavaScript UTF-16 code units: a simple smile emoji can occupy two units even though it looks like one symbol. Combining marks and joined emoji can use still more. Languages without spaces are not segmented with a dictionary.
Reading time, lines, and sentences
Word Counter estimates reading time at 200 words per minute, rounded up to whole minutes for nonempty word counts. It is a pacing assumption, not a measurement of an individual reader. Sentence counting is a punctuation heuristic and may misread abbreviations or unfinished sentences. Paragraph totals count nonempty lines, so a single paragraph pasted with hard line wraps can count as several.
Checklist for a submission limit
Check whether the destination asks for words, characters, or bytes and whether spaces count. Paste the final text, including required headings, into the relevant counter. Remove only unintended whitespace, then verify the destination form itself. The without-spaces total removes tabs and line breaks as well as ordinary spaces; do not use it for a limit that includes whitespace.
Limitations: platform rules take priority
A social platform may count URLs, emoji, or normalized text differently. UTF-16 totals are not byte sizes and are not a count of visible symbols. Use Word Counter for draft length and Character Counter for an entered numerical target, but treat a destination’s own validation as the final check. Text Cleaner can alter the input, so count again after cleaning.
